This was before I broke my back in 2011, which left me on disability, and definitely not retired.

Manage Your Expectations
First things first: throw out any preconceived notions of overnight success. The stories you hear about people making thousands in a month might be true for them, but they’re not the norm. When I returned to affiliate marketing in 2025, I knew from experience that patience would be key. Setting realistic goals can save you a lot of frustration down the road.

I learned this lesson after losing time — which is arguably more precious than money at my age. Dive into free resources first before spending on courses or software you may not need. Embrace Technology
Years ago, I had little faith in technology beyond email. But AI tools today really do make things easier—whether that’s automating routine tasks or helping craft content. Embrace them early on; they can help level the playing field between you and those tech-savvy youngsters who seem to have it all figured out.
The Importance of Community
This is something I dismissed initially but now see as crucial: find your community online. Being around others who are also navigating their midlife financial journeys can offer encouragement and practical advice when you’re feeling stuck or overwhelmed.
Don’t Go at It Alone
No, I’m not suggesting you hire a team (who has the budget for that?). But do engage with mentors or peers who have walked this path before you. Learn from their mistakes so you don’t have to make them yourself.
Be Prepared to Pivot
Your first attempt might not work out as planned—mine certainly didn’t in 2014! But failure is just part of the process. Be ready to adapt your strategy based on what’s working (or not). Flexibility can be one of your biggest assets in this game.
