The 3 Skills You Actually Need to Start (and 3 You Don’t)

It’s a cold morning in Knoxville, and I’m sitting here thinking about all the things I thought I needed to start affiliate marketing back when I first tried in 2014. Turns out, I was wrong about a lot of them. My first go-around was a complete bust—I made $0. That’s right, not a single cent. But that experience taught me what truly matters and what doesn’t.

The Skills You Really Need

Let’s kick off with the skills you actually need. These are things that have genuinely helped me as I’ve restarted my journey in 2025 using AI tools.

  • Adaptability: Whether it’s trying new AI tools or tweaking your approach to social media, adaptability is everything. The landscape changes fast, and if you can’t roll with the punches, you’re going to struggle.
  • Basic Tech Savviness: You don’t need to be a tech wizard, but knowing your way around WordPress and basic online tools is crucial. When I came back into this in 2025, I realized just how much more confident I felt after learning some basics.
  • Content Creation: This one is huge. If you can’t create content that people care about, it doesn’t matter what else you do. Start simple—a blog post like this, a short video—and focus on improving over time.

The Skills You Can Skip (For Now)

Now for the skills everyone says you need but really aren’t critical at the start.

  • Advanced Marketing Jargon: Metrics like CTRs and conversion funnels can make your head spin. They’re useful down the line but not essential when you’re building from scratch like me.
  • Coding Skills: You might feel pressure to learn how to code because everyone says it’s important. Honestly? It’s not an immediate need thanks to user-friendly platforms available today.
  • Slick Sales Techniques: You don’t need killer sales tactics right away. In fact, being too salesy can turn people off quickly—something I’ve realized through trial and error.

Avoiding Burnout by Focusing on What Matters

I remember wasting so much time on things that didn’t matter during my first attempt at affiliate marketing in 2014. It’s easy to get bogged down by thinking you need every skill under the sun when you’re starting. This mindset leads straight to burnout—especially if you’re doing this solo on a tight budget like me.

If you’re feeling stuck or overwhelmed, try focusing on these three essential skills first: adaptability, basic tech know-how, and content creation. They’re foundational and will serve you well in your journey.

The rest? Let them come naturally as you grow and gain confidence—just don’t let them hold you back from starting now.
