New to Affiliate Marketing? Here’s What to Do in Your First Week

When I first dipped my toes into affiliate marketing back in 2014, you could say I belly-flopped. I spent months working at it and made a grand total of $0. That was enough to drive me away for years. But now I’m back at it, using AI tools to help navigate the waters. While I’m not raking in the cash just yet, I’ve learned a thing or two about what to do when you’re starting out—lessons I wish I’d known back then.

Pick a Niche You Can Stick With

One big mistake I made early on was trying to be everything to everyone. Trust me, it’s exhausting and doesn’t work. Pick a niche that interests you and has an audience willing to spend money. You’re going to be creating lots of content around this topic, so make sure it’s something you won’t get tired of talking about by next Tuesday.

Research Affiliate Programs

Your first instinct might be to jump on the biggest programs out there like Amazon Associates, but hold your horses. Look into smaller programs specific to your niche as well. They often offer better commission rates and have less competition. Spend some time comparing options before signing up.

Create Your Basic Online Presence

You don’t need a fancy website right off the bat. Start with a simple blog or even just a social media profile dedicated to your chosen niche. Get comfortable putting your thoughts out there, and don’t stress over getting everything perfect immediately—trust me, nothing ever is.

Focus on Content Creation

This is where many folks trip up. When you’re just starting out, content is king—or at least a very influential duke. Write informative posts that solve problems or answer questions in your niche. Don’t worry about SEO optimization too much in the first week; just focus on being useful and authentic.

Establish Relationships

No man—or affiliate—is an island. Engage with others in your niche through forums, social media groups, or blog comments. Building genuine relationships can open doors you didn’t even know existed. Plus, you’ll learn from people who have been around the block a few times.

Set Realistic Goals

This one’s crucial: set goals you can actually hit in your first week. Whether it’s writing three blog posts or researching five affiliate programs, start small so you can celebrate small wins and build momentum.

Remember, everyone’s journey looks different, but making these basic moves will give you a solid foundation to build upon as you go forward.
