Starting Affiliate Marketing After 60: A Realistic First-90-Days Plan
Back in 2014, I decided to give affiliate marketing a shot. I spent hours reading and learning, only to end up making a grand total of $0. Not exactly inspiring, right? So I quit. Fast forward to 2025, armed with AI tools, I’m back at it, determined not to repeat the past. If you’re over 60 and thinking about dipping your toes into affiliate marketing, here’s a realistic plan for your first 90 days.
Start With Research
You might think you need to jump right in and start promoting products immediately. That’s where I went wrong the first time around. Instead, dedicate some time to research. Look into niches that interest you but also have potential for profitability. During this phase, you’ll want to find affiliate programs that align with these niches.
Make sure you understand what people in those niches are buying and how they are talking about those products. Use forums, Facebook groups, or even Reddit threads to get an idea of what your audience cares about.
Create a Simple Website
The thought of setting up a website used to terrify me. I thought it involved complex coding and expensive web developers. The reality is much simpler now thanks to platforms like WordPress. Start by choosing a domain name related to your niche and set up a basic site.
During my first attempt back in 2014, I skipped this step and tried promoting through social media alone—big mistake! A website gives you control over your content and a place for people to find you.
Write Quality Content
This is where most people get stuck because they assume they need expertise in writing or marketing. Trust me, if I can write blog posts from my living room in Knoxville without prior experience, so can you.
The focus should be on creating valuable content that addresses problems or questions your audience has. It could be product reviews, how-to guides, or simple tips related to your niche.
Promote Your Content
Once you’ve got some articles up on your site, your next step is promotion. Share them on social media platforms where your target audience hangs out. Consider joining online communities related to your niche and share your insights there too.
Don’t expect overnight success—this part takes time. But stay consistent; that’s where many falter.
Analyze and Adjust
Your first few weeks are going to be filled with trial and error—that’s normal. Regularly check which pieces of content are getting traffic and which aren’t performing well. Tools like Google Analytics can help with this, even if you’re not tech-savvy.
I learned that adjusting strategies based on real data was more effective than sticking rigidly to my initial plan. Flexibility is key here.
The Importance of Patience
If there’s one lesson I’ve learned from jumping back into affiliate marketing after 60, it’s patience. Things move slower than we’d often like them to at this age but remember: slow progress is still progress.
Your first 90 days will involve lots of learning—don’t be discouraged by small setbacks or mistakes along the way.
