FTC Disclosure Rules for Affiliates: What I Do to Stay Honest
Back when I first tried affiliate marketing in 2014, I didn’t make a dime. Zilch. I had no idea how to navigate the rules or even what they were. When I came back to it in 2025, things had changed quite a bit. One thing that stood out was the importance of FTC disclosure rules for affiliates. If you’re still on the fence about whether these apply to you, let me clear it up: they do. It doesn’t matter if you made $0 like me in my first attempt or you’re just starting out; being transparent is non-negotiable.
The Myth of “Small Time” Exemption
I used to think that since I wasn’t making significant money, the rules didn’t matter much. I was wrong. The FTC doesn’t care about how much you make; they care about honesty and transparency with your audience. Even as a small-time affiliate, you’re still required to let readers know when a link could earn you a commission.
So, how do I stay honest? Well, it starts with acknowledging that every link matters, regardless of its earnings potential.
Clear and Conspicuous Disclosures
The FTC guidelines are quite clear: disclosures must be easy to spot and understand. No hiding them in footnotes or behind tiny links labeled “legal.” What works for me is placing a simple sentence at the top of my posts when affiliate links are involved. Something like, “Some links in this post may earn me a commission at no extra cost to you.” Simple, direct, effective.
No Automatic Assumptions
Another mistake I almost made was assuming my audience would just know that I’m using affiliate links because it’s common practice online. That’s not how it works. The assumption game can lead to trust issues with your readers, and that’s the last thing anyone needs when they’re trying to build something from scratch like I am now.
Explicitly stating the nature of your financial relationship with product vendors isn’t just for their benefit—it’s also for yours. It’s part of building an honest relationship.
Honesty Above All Else
If there’s one thing I’ve learned over time, it’s that honesty builds loyalty far better than any marketing tactic ever will. Maybe someone lands on my page and decides not to click through after reading my disclosure—that’s fine by me because I’m playing the long game here. Building a loyal audience who trusts what you say is far more valuable than any quick buck from a sneaky link.
I always remind myself that one day I could be called upon by the FTC to prove I’m following their guidelines faithfully. Keeping records of all disclosures gives me peace of mind that I’ve done everything right and above board.
Staying Updated
Rules change, as do best practices. Keeping myself up-to-date with any changes in FTC guidelines is crucial. This involves regularly checking their website for updates or even subscribing to newsletters that specialize in legal advice for bloggers and affiliates.
An Ongoing Commitment
If you’re newer to affiliate marketing or have struggled like I did back in 2014, don’t let fear of regulations hold you back. Think of these rules as tools for building credibility rather than hurdles to clear hastily. Full disclosure means full trust from your audience—something money can’t buy.
